Welcome Boelter's!

I know there are some Boelter/Belter/Balter people in the USA who are tracing their roots back to Germany, esp. to Pommern and Posen. I believe that I am the only Boelter in Germany who is trying to do the same.

Sorry for my bad English. And very sorry that I did not translate my pages, that was too difficult for me.

You can go through our ancestry (19th century and earlier) by choosing a place (pop up menu "Ortsliste" at the left) or by checking the names which are linked to the places.
There are some nice pages (1, 2, 3) about the origin of the name in 11th century, the coat of arms, the changes from Boltor, Bultor, Bolter, Bulter, Buelter (and more) to Boelter, correctly written with umlaut strokes: Bölter (wonder if your browser could show umlauts, but today you may choose UTF-8 as your standard browser font code). There are some Belter's and Balter's all over the world, but most (not all) of them are Bölter's avoiding umlauts.

Please note: ALL german born "Boelter" on these pages should be red as "Bölter"!

There is a detailed historical map ("Übersichtskarte"), you can zoom in by clicking a rectangle. Most of the place pages are also linked to the matching map ("Zur Detailkarte:").

Most of the "Belter" were living around Gramenz. I'm not sure if they have the same root than the "Boelter" families. Therefore Belter places are marked by a blue spot.

My main sources were the LDS data base, some additions by Ancestry.com and some hints from Google. The main problem was to restore and to link the raw data and to find all these very small villages on the map. I had to adjust a lot of spelling mistakes and broken ties.

Please don't hesitate to ask questions. I'd spent a lot of time for this site trying not only to trace my own ancestors but the whole Boelter history. It is a big puzzle, and it is still incomplete.

You are lucky to had a census in 1880 which captured some more Boelter families than the church records in eastern Germany. Please send any information which may complete my listing.

Thank you!
